We Find the Old Layers First
New paper only looks as good as the wall under it. In a cottage from the 1970s or 1980s, we take down what earlier owners hung, repair the surface, and show that work on your estimate before you book.

Of the three Topsail Island towns, Topsail Beach has the oldest median build year. The Census Bureau's 2020-2024 American Community Survey puts its median build year at 1985, ahead of North Topsail Beach at 1989 and Surf City at 2002. About two in five homes here went up before 1980, and roughly two in five more between 1980 and 1999. Fewer than one in ten date from 2010 or later, by the ACS estimate.
They are houses, too. Nearly 88 percent are single-family detached. Very few homes here sit in buildings of ten or more units, so the wall you're papering is most likely in a detached house.
Age changes the wall you are papering. A room that has seen forty years of owners may hold an earlier paper, and some of that paper may since have been painted over. Paint from several decades can sit in layers beneath it. Removing old paper and repairing the wall is part of every installation we do, though painted-over paper comes away slower and the estimate accounts for it. Under federal EPA rules, paid work that disturbs paint in most homes built before 1978 must follow lead-safe practices.
Island air is the second factor. Humidity and salt exposure can affect how paste cures and which papers last in a bathroom. Topsail Beach is in Pender County, at the south end of the island.
By the time most people call us, the paper is already chosen, by them or by a designer. Still deciding? We work out the roll count from the pattern repeat, so one order covers the room. The hanging is done by installers on our own W-2 payroll, never by a subcontractor, and a powder room with an accent wall is a normal day's work. For how we prep, measure and hang in detail, see our wallpaper installation page.
Any paper already on the wall stripped, and the surface repaired
Primer or sizing suited to the paper you picked
A true vertical marked for the first strip
Pattern lined up at every seam around the room
Inside corners cut by hand, never wrapped
A final look at the room with you, then cleanup

Before any primer, we find out what the last forty years left behind. A paper that someone rolled paint over has to be scored and soaked before it lets go, which takes longer than stripping a bare one, so it is priced in rather than discovered on the day. Under that, several owners' paint may be stacked up, and a weak layer can lift when wet paste goes over it; we check adhesion first. Under federal EPA rules, paid work that disturbs paint in most homes built before 1978 must follow lead-safe practices. For a bathroom, ask before ordering: grasscloth tends to react to damp air more than a vinyl does, and unpasted papers hang differently. A Topsail Beach home built since 2000 skips most of this.

New paper only looks as good as the wall under it. In a cottage from the 1970s or 1980s, we take down what earlier owners hung, repair the surface, and show that work on your estimate before you book.

Haven't ordered yet? We'll tell you which papers handle a damp beach-house bathroom and which belong in a dry bedroom, then count rolls from the repeat so you order once.

Two generations of paperhanging sit behind the crew, and we're Wallpaper Installers Association members. Corners are hand-cut rather than wrapped, so the pattern restarts true on the next wall.

The people on your Topsail Beach job are W-2 employees, never subcontractors. They work under our $2M general liability, workers' comp and auto coverage, and we call before we arrive.
From the first conversation to the finished room.
01Request the instant estimate, choose the build-year range, and say whether paper is on the wall now and whether it was painted over. That answer sets the removal time we price.
02Still shopping for paper? We work the roll count out from the repeat and the room size. Dates usually open two to three weeks out, and we confirm yours by phone.
03We call before we arrive. Earlier paper and loose paint come off first, the wall is patched and primed, and hanging starts from a plumb mark.
04We don't call it finished until you've looked at each seam with the installer. The installation carries our 1-year workmanship guarantee.
You get a firm price for your room from the instant estimate, not a per-roll rate. In a town where four homes in five were built before 2000, the wall's history can move the price a great deal. These set the number:
Wall area and ceiling height
The paper: vinyl and grasscloth each hang their own way, and unpasted papers hang differently
Pattern repeat, which decides cuts and waste
Earlier paper to remove, and whether it was painted over
Repairs to the wall once the old layers are off
In an older Topsail Beach cottage, removal can move the price a great deal, so tell us what's on the wall when you request the estimate. A house built since 2000 usually needs less of it. We honor the number we quote. Paper isn't included unless you buy it through us, and military households get 10% off the installation.

The rooms around a papered wall can be repainted by the same company.

We source trade papers, including humidity-friendly vinyls for a cottage bath, and can hunt down a pattern you saw elsewhere.

From our Wilmington base, we serve Topsail Beach and the surrounding Pender County area, plus the rest of the coastal Carolinas corridor.
Tell us the house's decade and what's on the wall, and we'll price the installation.
