Wallpaper Installation in Holden Beach's 1970s and 1980s Houses

The Census Bureau's 2020-2024 American Community Survey puts the median Holden Beach home at 1992; the figure is 1996 for Ocean Isle Beach and 2000 for Sunset Beach. Of the town's 2,486 homes, 41.1 percent were built between 1970 and 1989, and the 1980s alone account for 29.2 percent, more than any other decade. Almost nothing predates 1950, and close to nine in ten homes are detached houses.

Paper hung in those years was often vinyl-faced, and a house from that era may still have its original. Vinyl changes how old paper comes off before a wallpaper installation. The plastic face can often be peeled away dry in long sheets, but it leaves its paper backing glued to the wall. That backing is then soaked and scraped off, and the old paste washed away, before anything new goes up.

You can usually tell which kind you have. Lift a corner at a seam: if a thin, plastic-feeling layer pulls free and leaves paper behind, it is vinyl-faced. Answer that question on the estimate form, or choose "Not sure". If the drywall face tears as the backing lets go, it is sealed and smoothed before priming.

About a third of Holden Beach homes went up in 2000 or later, and a wall in one of those with paint alone skips removal. Holden Beach Town Hall sits about 44 road miles from our Judges Road shop.

What Wallpaper Installation in Holden Beach Includes

Most people who call us already own their paper, picked on their own or with a designer. Still deciding? Send the pattern before you order, and we calculate the rolls from its repeat. The person hanging it is on our W-2 payroll and covered by our $2M general liability, workers' comp and auto insurance. For the full method, step by step, read how our wallpaper installation works on the main service page.

On every installation

Any existing paper stripped and the surface under it repaired

Primer or sizing chosen for the paper

A true plumb line for the first drop

Each seam matched to the pattern, the motif kept level

Inside corners hand-cut, never wrapped

The room reviewed with you, then left clean

What changes in a 1970s or 1980s house

The first question is what is on the wall: vinyl-faced or plain paper, one layer or two. Vinyl facing is dry-stripped first, then the backing left behind is wetted and scraped away. Plain paper without a vinyl face has to be soaked through instead, which usually takes longer. Old adhesive is washed off, because residue under new paper can stop it bonding. Where the drywall face tears, it is sealed before any skim coat. A paneled room needs its own prep. Removal and repair show on your estimate as their own time. A Holden Beach home built since 2000, with paint and nothing else on the wall, skips nearly all of it.

Why Holden Beach Homeowners Choose Intracoastal Wallcovering for Wallpaper Installation

Ready for a 1980s Wall

Nearly three Holden Beach homes in ten went up in the 1980s, the town's largest decade. We expect original paper in rooms of that age and plan its removal before the first strip goes up.

Backing Off, Never Papered Over

When a vinyl face peels away dry, the paper backing left on the wall is soaked and scraped off rather than used as a base. The old paste is washed off as well, so new paper grips the wall.

Hand-Cut Where the Walls Turn

Intracoastal is a second-generation wallpaper company, and we belong to the Wallpaper Installers Association. In your room, every inside corner gets cut by hand rather than wrapped, so the pattern lines up on both walls.

How Much Does Wallpaper Installation Cost in Holden Beach?

What sets the number is the room itself, and in Holden Beach the old paper on the wall can move the price a good deal. The figure depends on:

Square footage of wall and the ceiling height

The paper: grasscloth and vinyl each hang their own way, and unpasted papers hang differently

The pattern repeat and the waste it adds at each seam

How many old layers there are, and whether the paper is vinyl-faced

Wall repair once the old paper is off

In a 1970s or 1980s house, choose the decade and the vinyl answer when you request the estimate, and put the layer count in the notes. A room in a house built since 2000, with nothing to strip, generally costs less for the same size. The quote is the quote we honor. Your paper is a separate cost unless we source it for you. Military households save 10%.
