Every Old Layer Comes Down
Borders, earlier patterns and paper that has been painted over all come off before your new paper goes up. Removal and wall repair are part of the installation, never an add-on you discover later.

Sneads Ferry's houses are older than those in the Onslow County towns around it. Its median home dates to 1986, per the Census Bureau's 2020-2024 American Community Survey; North Topsail Beach's is 1989, Jacksonville's 1992 and Holly Ridge's 2015. Nearly three homes in five went up before 1990, close to one in five in the 1960s alone, and only about one in eight since 2010.
A house that has changed hands a few times over 40 years tends to collect wallcoverings. The room you want papered may still carry a border from one owner and a full wall of paper from the next, sometimes with paint rolled straight over both. Every layer comes off and the wall underneath gets repaired as part of your installation, and the estimate accounts for what's there.
What sits under the old paper matters just as much. Decades ago, paper often went onto bare drywall with no primer beneath it, and pulling it off can lift the drywall's own paper face. That torn surface has to be sealed and smoothed before new paper will lie flat. Settled houses also wander out of square, which affects where the first strip is hung.
Ownership shapes the schedule. More than one home in five here is held for seasonal or occasional use, so if yours is a second home, tell us who will open it on install day. Sneads Ferry is an unincorporated community in Onslow County, within our service area.
Usually the paper is already chosen by the time you call, either by you or by a designer you're working with. Our part is hanging it so the wall looks like the sample did. The crew is on our payroll as W-2 employees, and no part of the work goes to a subcontractor. For the method in full, including corners and repeats, see our wallpaper installation page.
A roll count from the pattern repeat, if you haven't ordered
Existing paper and borders stripped, then the wall repaired
A sealed, smooth surface under the new paper
A level starting line in place of the room's corner
Strips matched at every seam, with the repeat kept level
Inside corners split by hand on a straight edge
A final look at the room with you, then cleanup

Expect the first part of the day to go to what earlier owners left behind. Layers are scored and loosened before they're pulled, and paper with paint over it takes longer to release. Where the drywall face tears, it's sealed and skimmed before any primer. Leftover adhesive from the old paper is washed off too, so the new primer bonds to the wall itself. Before cutting, the installer checks each corner against a level, since a room that has settled can be off by enough to tilt a pattern. Rooms with wood paneling need a separate answer, covered in the questions below.

When stripping lifts the drywall face, we seal and smooth it first. Fresh paper over a torn surface shows every ridge, and good paper deserves a flat wall.

A 1980s room may be a little out of square. We hang from a level line, and every inside corner is cut by hand, the way a second-generation wallpaper company was taught.

We pick up, we call before the crew heads your way, and the quote is the quote we honor. Military households get 10% off.
From the first conversation to the finished room.
01Request the instant estimate and choose paint, old paper or paneling. A close-up of a seam or torn corner shows us the layers.
02The estimate reflects the layers you described. Dates usually open two to three weeks from booking.
03After a call from us, every earlier layer comes off and soft or torn spots are rebuilt and sealed. New paper goes onto that surface, never over the old.
04Run your eye along each seam and into each corner before the tools are packed. A year of workmanship coverage begins with that sign-off.
The instant estimate prices your room exactly; we don't list rates, because what's already on an older wall can change the job a great deal. What moves the number:
Wall area and height, which decide the strip count
The paper: grasscloth, vinyl and unpasted designer papers each hang differently
Pattern repeat, as a larger repeat wastes more at each cut
What comes off first: one layer, several, a border, or paper under paint
Repair afterward, from small dings to a torn drywall face
In Sneads Ferry, the last two lines can move the total a great deal, which is why the form asks what's on the wall now. The number you're quoted is the number we honor. Our figure covers the labor; the paper is yours to buy unless you order it through us. Military households get a 10% discount.

Stripping paper in one room and repainting the rest? We do interior painting as well.
