Trim Prepped by Hand
A power sander run along a Greek Revival casing rounds off the very edges that make it worth keeping. We hand-sand profiles and clear failed paint from the recesses before priming, so a fresh coat sits on sound paint.

The Swansboro Historic District, listed on the National Register in 1990, was largely developed between 1890 and 1925. Its houses went up in Federal, Greek Revival and Bungalow or Craftsman styles. Inside, many may keep the woodwork that came with them: wide casings, paneled doors, built-ins and fireplace mantels. Painting that trim is slower work than rolling a wall.
Old trim has often been painted many times. Coats build up in the profile of a molding until the detail softens, and the earliest may be oil-based, which latex won't grip without a bonding primer. We clean and degloss the trim, sand by hand where a machine would round an edge, and test older coats before choosing a primer. Under federal EPA rules, paid work that disturbs paint in most homes built before 1978 must follow lead-safe practices. The Census Bureau's 2020-2024 American Community Survey counts 29.8 percent of Swansboro homes as built before 1980.
Interior work generally falls outside the review of Swansboro's Historic Preservation Commission. We paint interiors only.
Most Swansboro houses are much newer. The median build year is 2002, and 54 percent went up in 2000 or later. Trim in those homes is often factory-primed with simple profiles, so a repaint is mostly patching, caulking and finish coats.
Hanging wallpaper for a living teaches you to see a wall's flaws before anyone else does. We bring that eye to paint. The person doing the painting reports to us, and our $2M general liability and workers' comp policies cover the job. Our interior painting page explains each step in more depth. The list below applies in any home; the block after it is particular to Swansboro's older houses.
Walls, ceilings, trim, doors and mantels, room by room as you choose
Holes and cracks filled and sanded smooth
Joints along casings and baseboards caulked
Stains spot-primed so they don't bleed through the new color
Furniture moved or covered and floors protected
A harder-wearing sheen on trim and doors than on walls
A walkthrough at the end, then cleanup

Period trim gets its own line on your estimate, because it takes more hours per room than the walls. Profiles are cleaned and hand-sanded so edges stay crisp. Paint that has failed is removed back to a sound edge, and older coats are tested before a bonding primer goes on. Paneled doors are painted panels first, then rails and stiles, so brush marks follow the wood. Built-ins get the same care as casings, shelf edges and face frames included. A door painted stuck to its jamb is freed and its edges cleaned before it is recoated. In a pre-1978 house, every step that disturbs paint follows lead-safe practice. A newer Swansboro home skips most of this and moves straight to patching and finish coats.

A power sander run along a Greek Revival casing rounds off the very edges that make it worth keeping. We hand-sand profiles and clear failed paint from the recesses before priming, so a fresh coat sits on sound paint.

Trim painted generations ago may be oil-based underneath. We check before priming, so the new finish bonds instead of lifting off in strips a year later.

Just under 30 percent of Swansboro homes predate 1980. If yours is one, ask how prep is handled before you book. You'll hear a straight answer on the first call, before any date is set.

Papering a dining room and painting the trim around it? One company schedules both, and the trim is finished before paper goes up beside it.
From the first conversation to the finished room.
01List the rooms and photograph any original casings, doors or mantels up close. Those pictures show us how much hand prep and priming the job needs.
02We confirm surfaces, colors and sheens with you, and note any older coats that need testing before a bonding primer.
03You get a call before the crew leaves Wilmington. Floors and furniture are covered, trim is prepped by hand and primed, then walls and woodwork are painted.
04You check each room with the painter, trim included, up close. Anything you flag gets touched up before cleanup and before the crew packs out.
We price your rooms instead of quoting a per-room rate, and you see the number before anything is scheduled. What moves it most:
Square footage and ceiling height
Surfaces: walls only, or ceilings, trim, doors and mantels too
Detailed period trim, which takes far longer per foot than flat casing
Older coats that need testing and a bonding primer
Lead-safe prep in a pre-1978 house
Number of colors and sheens
In a historic-district house, the trim is where most of the labor goes, so your estimate lists it apart from the walls. That separate line lets you decide room by room whether to paint all the original trim now or leave some for later. A newer Swansboro home with simple, factory-primed trim usually costs less per room. Once quoted, your price doesn't move. Military families save 10%.

Earlier paper stripped and new paper hung level, even in a room that has settled out of square.

Help choosing a paper to sit beside freshly painted trim, or finding one you saw elsewhere.
