The Wall Gets Fixed First
In an older house, what sits behind the paint decides how new paper looks. We strip earlier paper and repair the surface before hanging, and your estimate says how much repair to expect.

The Swansboro Historic District has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1990. Its houses were largely developed between 1890 and 1925, in Federal, Greek Revival and Bungalow or Craftsman styles. A room from that window was finished long before drywall became standard, and the wall you plan to paper may show it.
That age shows. In a house built then, the walls may be plaster, and there may be one or more layers of earlier paper under the paint. Rooms that have stood for a century have often settled, so a corner can lean enough to tilt a pattern. Taking old paper down and repairing the wall is part of every installation we do, and an older wall usually needs more of that repair. Under federal EPA rules, paid work that disturbs paint in most homes built before 1978 must follow lead-safe practices.
Most of Swansboro is far newer. The Census Bureau's 2020-2024 American Community Survey puts the town's median build year at 2002, with 54 percent of homes built in 2000 or later and about a third since 2010. Just under 30 percent went up before 1980. In a newer house the wall is usually drywall, the corners sit closer to true, and prep is mostly sealing the surface so the paper slides into place now and strips cleanly years from now.
Our crew reaches Swansboro, in Onslow County, by driving up the coast from Wilmington. Put your home's rough build year on the estimate form, because it shapes the prep.
Most customers come to us with paper already picked out, either their own choice or a designer's. If you haven't ordered yet, we work out the roll count from the pattern repeat so you buy the right amount the first time. Every installer is on our W-2 payroll, and no part of the job goes to a subcontractor. Every step of the method is laid out on our wallpaper installation page.
Earlier paper taken down and the wall repaired before anything new is hung
The surface primed or sized for the paper you chose
A plumb line set with a level instead of read off the corner
Seams matched and the repeat carried level from wall to wall
Inside corners hand-cut on a straight edge, never wrapped
A walkthrough with you at the end, then cleanup

Older walls ask more of the first hour. Plaster that has cracked or pulled loose gets repaired before primer, because paper shows every ridge beneath it. Where earlier paper was painted over, removal runs slower, and the estimate shows that time up front. In a room that leans, we balance the pattern so it reads level at eye height instead of following one tilted corner. If you're still choosing paper, tight stripes and crisp geometrics expose an out-of-square wall more than a loose floral or a grasscloth does. In a house built after 2000, little of this applies, and the first hour goes straight to priming.

In an older house, what sits behind the paint decides how new paper looks. We strip earlier paper and repair the surface before hanging, and your estimate says how much repair to expect.

Century-old rooms rarely stand square. We hang from a plumb line rather than the corner, so a stripe stays vertical beside the window even when the wall next to it drifts.

We're a second-generation wallpaper company and Wallpaper Installers Association members. Each inside corner is cut by hand on a straight edge, which counts for most where the corner itself is out of plumb.

More than half of Swansboro's homes were built since 2000. If yours is one of them, the estimate reflects a drywall job, without older-wall repair the house doesn't need.
From the first conversation to the finished room.
01Request the instant estimate, pick a build-year range and mention in your estimate request whether the house is in the old downtown. A photo of an old seam or a cracked corner sharpens the number.
02If you haven't ordered, we calculate rolls from the pattern repeat, with extra for a leaning room. Our calendar typically fills two to three weeks ahead.
03On the day, any earlier paper comes down and cracks in the old surface are patched before primer goes on. Only then does the first strip go up.
04Walk the room with the installer and check each corner and seam. The 1-year workmanship guarantee runs from that walkthrough.
The instant estimate prices your actual room. That matters in a town whose housing runs from the 1890s historic core to subdivisions built since 2010, because two rooms of the same size can need very different prep. What moves the number:
Wall area and ceiling height
The paper itself: grasscloth, vinyl and unpasted papers each hang differently
Pattern repeat, since a large repeat means more waste
How many layers of old paper come down first
Plaster or drywall repair once the old paper is off
In an older Swansboro house, removal and repair are where the price moves most, so mention any old paper when you ask for an estimate. A newer house usually needs less prep for the same room. Whatever we quote is what we honor. Unless you buy the paper through us, it isn't part of the quote. Military households receive 10% off.
